5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Water heaters don’t last forever. And when they go, they tend to go suddenly. Avoid the cold surprise by knowing the warning signs that it might be time for a replacement.

1. It’s Over 10 Years Old

Most standard tank water heaters last 8–12 years. If yours is creeping up in age, it’s smart to start thinking about a replacement before you lose hot water unexpectedly.

2. Rusty Water

If your hot water is coming out discolored, your tank could be rusting on the inside. This is often a sign that a leak is around the corner.

3. Rumbling or Banging Sounds

Over time, sediment builds up inside your water heater. As it hardens, it can create popping or rumbling noises—a sign that the unit is struggling and may be less efficient.

4. Leaks Around the Base

Any sign of water pooling around your water heater is a red flag. Small leaks can quickly become big problems if left alone.

5. Inconsistent or Cold Water

If your showers are suddenly lukewarm (or ice cold), your water heater might not be performing efficiently anymore.

Upgrade to a Tankless Water Heater

If you’re replacing an old tank, consider going tankless for endless hot water, energy savings, and longer lifespan.
